Like most people in their twenties, I have been entrenched within the battling dualities of adulthood- exhilarating personal freedom at odds with the mundane reality of responsibility. In many ways, I feel this is the last Indian Summer, and I have spent a lot of it near or on South Padre Island since I moved back to the Valley. Anyone who has ever lived near a beach knows it is bereft with possibility and spontaneous midnight summer adventures, making it the ideal inspiration for this mix. Summer on Padre means temporary solace from that less sparkly part of adulthood.
So here is a romantic summer soundtrack for you, backward-looking, rose-color
ed glasses-wearing, aging, sort of-yuppie hipster.

Diamond Cut starts it off with an ethereal and synthy remix of Cinnamon Chasers (recalling recent work done by Fred Falke for Grizzly Bear and The Gossip), followed by nu-disco songstress Sally Shapiro’s latest melancholic single (btw if you haven’t seen the video for this song you’re missing out- it’s about the bittersweet love story between a whale and a pet gold fish). Tiga turns the night on, succeeded by some bass-heavy, glitched out magic-come-vocal manipulations to set the tone (the Discovery track transitions in smoothly behind Pictureplane, no?). This mix wouldn’t be a Summer ‘09 mix without a showing from Knightlife or current “it-sters” Classixx (”Tell me, do you like bass?”). Things get moody with the sharp and demanding beats from 99, and the dark and soulful textures from electro-heroes Junior Boys. Karin Dreijer comes in with Röyksopp and kills it- no surprise there. The vibe shifts considerably with the contemplative and trip-hoppy “Ecstacy” (which is the most infectious song I’ve heard all year- it’s just so damn good) and Nite Jewel. Another sonic change, and things go all out dreamwave- Tough Alliance, Holy Ghost!, Vega. The credits roll with the ‘original’ version of house hit “Something About You” (”I don’t know what I’d do without you baby/don’t know what I’d do/you’re not just another lover/no, you’re everything to me”).

I truly love all of the music on this mix. Sincerely Yours is really knocking it out of the park (the Swedes are kind of dominating everyone else this year). As for this talk about dreamwave- it is like a sonic state of nostalgia. (”It makes people feel young, pure and simple. Often times people associate this music with the 80’s, or just being a fad in the endless cycle of past decades’ reemergence in pop culture…but that’s all just a side effect for what it’s really about. We feel good hearing it. We feel at peace, one with innocence. We remember what it was like when emotions made us feel desperation, like everyday was the most important day of our lives.” Yeah.) Notably, I didn’t include any Major Lazer (or other dancehall). That’s because I don’t have much of it and I didn’t think it fit in with the sound I was going for (except for the new remix by Classixx- but I didn’t want to overload with Classixx). I hope to start bringing the dreamwave at human frequencies dance parties from now on.

If this is your bag (and I hope it is), you should check out GvB, Binary, nightmagnets, and hot biscuits- some of the more essential music blogs that have introduced me to most of what is in this mix.

Buh-Dace!!
PARTY ON LING ST.
:)
I’ve decided that Jason should be President of the Dreamwave Emo Kings. Every time he enters a room the lights will dim and candles will flicker on, and he will dance around and sing Lake Heartbeat to the ladies.
